As we approach the heart of August, teams and franchises are starting to settle into their new rosters and embrace fresh identities following last week’s trade deadline. The National League remains significantly more present at the top of the league-wide standings, but several American League teams aren’t far behind, making strong pushes to position themselves for the next couple of months ahead as the postseason picture becomes more clear. With teams jockeying for Wild Card spots and momentum shifting, this week’s power rankings reflect the balance of rising contenders and those still fighting to find their footing, so with that in mind, let’s dive into which teams you should continue or start keeping an eye on:
1. Milwaukee Brewers (73-44)
8/4 – @ Braves – Won 3-1
8/5 – @ Braves – Won 7-2
8/6 – @ Braves – Won 5-4
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Mets – Won 3-2
8/9 – vs. Mets – Won 7-4
8/10 – vs. Mets – Won 7-6
After sweeping both the Braves and the Mets and capping the week off in walk-off fashion on Sunday, the Brewers have now won nine straight and 12 of their last 13 games, continuing to prove that they’re as legitimate of a threat to win the NL pennant as anyone. They’re on pace to win 100 games for the first time ever, and with their best baseball coming this late in the season, they’re going to be a hard team to take down in October.
Up next: vs. Pirates (8/11-13), @ Reds (8/15-17)
2. Philadelphia Phillies (68-49)
8/4 – vs. Orioles – Won 13-3
8/5 – vs. Orioles – Won 5-0
8/6 – vs. Orioles – Lost 5-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Rangers – Won 9-1
8/9 – @ Rangers – Won 3-2
8/10 – @ Rangers – Won 4-2
After losing an embarrassing three-game series against the White Sox last week in Chicago, the Phillies have showed no signs of slowing down with a 7-2 record in the month of August and three straight series wins over the Tigers, Orioles, and Rangers. Once their bullpen becomes healthier as Nola is still out and Wheeler is dealing with some pain, they’ll easily have one of the most talented and complete lineups in the MLB.
Up next: @ Reds (8/11-13), @ Nationals (8/14-17, 4 Games)
3. Los Angeles Dodgers (68-50)
8/4 – vs. Cardinals – Lost 3-2
8/5 – vs. Cardinals – Won 12-6
8/6 – vs. Cardinals – Lost 5-3
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Blue Jays – Won 5-1
8/9 – vs. Blue Jays – Won 9-1
8/10 – vs. Blue Jays – Lost 5-4
The Dodgers bounced back from a tough home series loss to the Cardinals by nearly sweeping the Blue Jays, and Shohei Ohtani continues to prove he’s among the game’s most gifted players. His production should spark a more consistent offense for a roster considered one of baseball’s deepest and most talented, and with a massive series ahead against the surging Padres, LA has a prime chance to remind everyone that they remain the clear frontrunner to rule the NL West.
Up next: @ Angels (8/11-13), vs. Padres (8/15-17)
4. Chicago Cubs (67-50)
8/4 – vs. Reds – Lost 3-2
8/5 – vs. Reds – Lost 5-1
8/6 – vs. Reds – Won 6-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Cardinals – Lost 5-0
8/9 – @ Cardinals – Won 9-1
8/10 – @ Cardinals – Lost 3-2
It was a tough week for Chicago, dropping both series to the Reds and Cardinals, but they avoided sweeps and remain the only MLB team in 2025 without a sweep or losing streak longer than three games. After a Monday rest day, they’ll face a key three-game set in Toronto followed by a home tune-up against the Pirates. That leads into a massive five-game home series next week against the red-hot Brewers, a matchup that could have major postseason implications.
Up next: @ Blue Jays (8/12-14), vs. Pirates (8/15-17)
5. Toronto Blue Jays (69-50)
8/4 – @ Rockies – Won 15-1
8/5 – @ Rockies – Won 10-4
8/6 – @ Rockies – Won 20-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Dodgers – Lost 5-1
8/9 – @ Dodgers – Lost 9-1
8/10 – @ Dodgers – Won 5-4
After absolutely dominating the Rockies in Denver early in the week, the Blue Jays narrowly escaped getting swept by the Dodgers after a late home run on Sunday by Addison Barger gave them a 4-2 record for the week. They get a much-needed rest on Monday before they host both the Cubs and Rangers in Toronto in what should show how much of a legitimate contender they are to win the AL pennant.
Up next: vs. Cubs (8/12-14), vs. Rangers (8/15-17)
6. San Diego Padres (66-52)
8/4 – @ Diamondbacks – Lost 6-2
8/5 – @ Diamondbacks – Won 10-5 (11)
8/6 – @ Diamondbacks – Won 3-2
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Red Sox – Lost 10-2
8/9 – vs. Red Sox – Won 5-4 (10)
8/10 – vs. Red Sox – Won 6-2
After remaining active at the trade deadline and adding some much-needed depth to their already talented lineup, the Padres have started hitting their stride again with competitive series wins over the Diamondbacks and Red Sox, giving them 9 wins in their last 12 starts. With two road series set for the upcoming week against the division-rival Giants and Dodgers, this week will prove just how impactful those trade acquisitions were and if they have a legitimate shot at claiming the NL West crown.
Up next: @ Giants (8/11-13), @ Dodgers (8/15-17)
7. Detroit Tigers (68-51)
8/4 – vs. Twins – Won 6-3
8/5 – vs. Twins – Lost 6-3
8/6 – vs. Twins – Lost 9-4
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Angels – Won 6-5
8/9 – vs. Angels – Lost 7-4
8/10 – vs. Angels – Won 9-5
It was a very up-and-down week for Detroit after going 3-3, losing to the Twins at home before taking two out of three over the Angels. I don’t think the Tigers will lose a hold of their massive lead in the AL Central anytime soon, but with how rough they’ve looked over the past month, it’s still concerning that they aren’t playing to the standard they played at early in the year and not ideal with a struggling bullpen outside of Skubal heading into the heart of August.
Up next: @ White Sox (8/11-13), @ Twins (8/14-17, 4 Games)
8. Houston Astros (66-52)
8/4 – @ Marlins – Won 8-2
8/5 – @ Marlins – Won 7-3
8/6 – @ Marlins – Lost 6-4
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Yankees – Won 5-3 (10)
8/9 – @ Yankees – Lost 5-4
8/10 – @ Yankees – Won 7-1
Houston had a pretty solid week this week after slowing down the Marlins’ momentum that they had built up since the end of the All-Star Break, bolstering history with Jose Altuve’s 250th career home run, taking down the Yankees in New York, and once again maintaining their spot at the top of the AL West. This week, they’re back at home with series against the Red Sox and Orioles, giving them an opportunity to strengthen their divisional grip.
Up next: vs. Red Sox (8/11-13), vs. Orioles (8/15-17)
9. Boston Red Sox (65-54)
8/4 – vs. Royals – Won 8-5
8/5 – vs. Royals – Won 6-2
8/6 – vs. Royals – Lost 7-3
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Padres – Won 10-2
8/9 – @ Padres – Lost 5-4 (10)
8/10 – @ Padres – Lost 6-2
The Red Sox had a solid start to the week with two victories over the Royals in Fenway before losing three of their last four starts, including two losses in San Diego. Their road trip continues Monday with another big series against the Astros before heading back home to host the Marlins next weekend, and while the young stars have shined in Boston, they hope Alex Bregman can continue his hot streak when he heads back to Houston to face an organization he won two World Series titles with.
Up next: @ Astros (8/11-13), vs. Marlins (8/15-17)
10. Seattle Mariners (66-53)
8/4 – OFF
8/5 – vs. White Sox – Won 8-3
8/6 – vs. White Sox – Won 8-6
8/7 – vs. White Sox – Won 4-3 (11)
8/8 – vs. Rays – Won 3-2
8/9 – vs. Rays – Won 7-4
8/10 – vs. Rays – Won 6-3
The Mariners might not have played elite competition this week, but they walked away Sunday with back-to-back home sweeps over the White Sox and Rays for nine wins in their last ten games, showing that they are one of the top threats in the AL and almost a sure Wild Card team. Cal Raleigh has homered in three straight games, and Julio Rodríguez has been red-hot, giving Seattle momentum heading into an East Coast trip to face the Orioles and then the Mets, which concludes with the Little League Classic in Williamsport next Sunday.
Up next: @ Orioles (8/12-14), @ Mets (8/15-17, 8/17 Little League Classic)
11. New York Mets (63-55)
8/4 – vs. Guardians – Lost 7-6 (10)
8/5 – vs. Guardians – Lost 3-2
8/6 – vs. Guardians – Lost 4-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Brewers – Lost 3-2
8/9 – @ Brewers – Lost 7-4
8/10 – @ Brewers – Lost 7-6
The sky seems to be falling at a rapid rate for this Mets team, who have now lost 11 of their last 12 games, including getting swept once last week in San Diego and twice this week against the Guardians and the Brewers after capping off the nightmare week by getting walked off in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, making them now 1-8 in the month of August. With how loaded the NL is right now, New York better find their groove again quick or they could easily find themselves outside of the Wild Card picture.
Up next: vs. Braves (8/12-14), vs. Mariners (8/15-17, 8/17 Little League Classic)
12. Texas Rangers (60-59)
8/4 – vs. Yankees – Won 8-5 (10)
8/5 – vs. Yankees – Won 2-0
8/6 – vs. Yankees – Lost 3-2
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Phillies – Lost 9-1
8/9 – vs. Phillies – Lost 3-2
8/10 – vs. Phillies – Lost 4-2
Yes, winning the series over the Yankees was great for the Rangers, but losing four games in a row to end the week, including a Phillies sweep over the weekend, hurt them in a big way. It was understandably a tough week for this squad with the talent they were up against, but if they want to remain in the AL Wild Card picture, they better find something quick against the Diamondbacks because a trip to Toronto looms large next weekend.
Up next: vs. Diamondbacks (8/11-13), @ Blue Jays (8/15-17)
13. New York Yankees (62-56)
8/4 – @ Rangers – Lost 8-5 (10)
8/5 – @ Rangers – Lost 2-0
8/6 – @ Rangers – Won 3-2
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Astros – Lost 5-3 (10)
8/9 – vs. Astros – Won 5-4
8/10 – vs. Astros – Lost 7-1
I find it hard to believe that this Yankees lineup has struggled as much as they have, but here we are as they’ve only won 21 games since mid-June. Two series losses to both the Rangers and Astros have continued their downfall, with a magical Trent Grisham performance on Saturday keeping them from getting swept at home over the weekend, and while I would say this week is a great opportunity for them to bounce back against Minnesota and St. Louis, I can’t even guarantee series victories over either of these teams.
Up next: vs. Twins (8/11-13), @ Cardinals (8/15-17)
14. Cincinnati Reds (62-57)
8/4 – @ Cubs – Won 3-2
8/5 – @ Cubs – Won 5-1
8/6 – @ Cubs – Lost 6-1
8/7 – @ Pirates – Lost 7-0
8/8 – @ Pirates – Lost 3-2
8/9 – @ Pirates – Won 2-1
8/10 – @ Pirates – Won 14-8
Cincinnati had themselves a pretty decent week after finishing 4-3, and while that included a split over the weekend with Pittsburgh, they were able to take down the Cubs at Wrigley Field. This team has what it takes to put themselves in a good spot in October, but they’ll have a massive hill to climb next week as, even though they’re back at home all week, they face the Phillies and Brewers, the two hottest teams in baseball right now.
Up next: vs. Phillies (8/11-13), vs. Brewers (8/15-17)
15. St. Louis Cardinals (60-59)
8/4 – @ Dodgers – Won 3-2
8/5 – @ Dodgers – Lost 12-6
8/6 – @ Dodgers – Won 5-3
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Cubs – Won 5-0
8/9 – vs. Cubs – Lost 9-1
8/10 – vs. Cubs – Won 3-2
St. Louis had arguably the toughest week of anyone, but behind Jordan Walker’s stellar performances at the plate, they managed to earn two massive series wins over both the Dodgers and the Cubs, quickly putting themselves back into Wild Card contention. With two more home series again this weekend against an awful Rockies team and then a plummeting Yankees squad, the Cardinals should be set for more success and more of a reason to climb back inside the Wild Card.
Up next: vs. Rockies (8/11-13), vs. Yankees (8/15-17)
16. Cleveland Guardians (61-56)
8/4 – @ Mets – Won 7-6 (10)
8/5 – @ Mets – Won 3-2
8/6 – @ Mets – Won 4-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ White Sox – Won 9-5
8/9 – @ White Sox – Won 3-1
8/10 – @ White Sox – Lost 6-4
When everything started seeming like the end of the world for the Cleveland Guardians, something finally clicked for them over the past month as they’ve won 22 of their last 29 games, making them one of the hottest teams in the AL and putting themselves right back into postseason contention like everyone expected them to be. They were 5-1 this week after sweeping the Mets and taking two out of three in Chicago, and they’re right back at home against the Marlins and Braves, two teams they should take care of to continue their late comeback.
Up next: vs. Marlins (8/12-14), vs. Braves (8/15-17)
17. Kansas City Royals (58-60)
8/4 – @ Red Sox – Lost 8-5
8/5 – @ Red Sox – Lost 6-2
8/6 – @ Red Sox – Won 7-3
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Twins – Lost 9-4
8/9 – @ Twins – Won 2-0
8/10 – @ Twins – Lost 5-3 (11)
The Royals have been one of the more on-and-off teams in the MLB this season, and after a solid week last week, they’ve now been 3-8 since last Sunday after losing once in Toronto, twice in Boston, and twice in Minnesota. Even with the consistency of Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals haven’t been able to generate much with their bats, but they’ll have a several opportunities to regroup this week with the Nationals and the White Sox coming in Kansas City.
Up next: vs. Nationals (8/11-13), vs. White Sox (8/15-17)
18. San Francisco Giants (59-59)
8/4 – @ Pirates – Lost 5-4
8/5 – @ Pirates – Won 8-1
8/6 – @ Pirates – Won 4-2
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Nationals – Won 5-0
8/9 – vs. Nationals – Lost 4-2
8/10 – vs. Nationals – Lost 8-0
The Giants are still technically in the Wild Card hunt, but their chances are fading fast after a 3-3 week against the Pirates and Nationals, which was capped by an ugly 8-0 loss to Washington on Sunday, arguably their worst showing of the season. The road ahead doesn’t get any smoother, with the Padres and Rays coming to town, and as the NL playoff race heats up, San Francisco finds itself on the outside looking in making their climb back into contention an uphill battle.
Up next: vs. Padres (8/11-13), vs. Rays (8/15-17)
19. Miami Marlins (57-61)
8/4 – vs. Astros – Lost 8-2
8/5 – vs. Astros – Lost 7-3
8/6 – vs. Astros – Won 6-4
8/7 – @ Braves – Lost 8-6
8/8 – @ Braves – Won 5-1
8/9 – @ Braves – Lost 7-1
8/9 – @ Braves – Lost 8-6
8/10 – @ Braves – Lost 7-1
The Marlins appeared to have turned a corner after one of their best stretches in years, but that momentum vanished with six losses in eight games this week. They avoided a sweep at home against the Astros, but any hope of rebounding in Atlanta quickly faded as they were outscored 22-8 over three games on Saturday and Sunday. Now heading on the road to face Cleveland and Boston, who are both making strong pushes as well, Miami faces a tough challenge to get back on track.
Up next: @ Guardians (8/12-14), @ Red Sox (8/15-17)
20. Minnesota Twins (56-61)
8/4 – @ Tigers – Lost 6-3
8/5 – @ Tigers – Won 6-3
8/6 – @ Tigers – Won 9-4
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Royals – Won 9-4
8/9 – vs. Royals – Lost 2-0
8/10 – vs. Royals – Won 5-3 (11)
Unlike most teams that sell at the trade deadline, the Twins have actually improved, even without Byron Buxton in the lineup. They took a series from a tough Tigers squad in Detroit, then returned home to win two of three against the Royals, giving them five victories in their last seven games. Next up, they’ll head to New York to face a talented but surprisingly vulnerable Yankees team before hosting the Tigers again in a four-game series in Minnesota.
Up next: @ Yankees (8/11-13), vs. Tigers (8/14-17, 4 Games)
21. Tampa Bay Rays (57-62)
8/4 – @ Angels – Lost 5-1
8/5 – @ Angels – Won 7-3
8/6 – @ Angels – Won 5-4
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Mariners – Lost 3-2
8/9 – @ Mariners – Lost 7-4
8/10 – @ Mariners – Lost 6-3
The Rays are in the middle of a long road trip out west, including a win over the Angels in Anaheim before getting swept in Seattle by the Mariners, and they now have two series in northern California this week against the A’s in Sacramento and the Giants in San Francisco. For a team that only has ten wins since the start of July, winning both of those series would be crucial for a Tampa Bay team whose offense seems to be getting carried week after week by the bat of Junior Caminero.
Up next: @ Athletics (8/11-13), @ Giants (8/15-17)
22. Los Angeles Angels (56-62)
8/4 – vs. Rays – Won 5-1
8/5 – vs. Rays – Lost 7-3
8/6 – vs. Rays – Lost 5-4
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Tigers – Lost 6-5
8/9 – @ Tigers – Won 7-4
8/10 – @ Tigers – Lost 9-5
The Angels continue to struggle, failing to capitalize on a key home opportunity against the Rays before being outplayed by a talented Tigers team. Despite the team’s ongoing issues, Mike Trout has remained a bright spot, entering Sunday with an eight-game hitting streak before it came to an end. Now just two home runs shy of reaching 400 for his career, Trout will aim to hit the milestone this week, though it won’t be easy with a tough Dodgers rotation ahead, followed by an Athletics team prone to giving up big hits.
Up next: vs. Dodgers (8/11-13), @ Athletics (8/15-17)
23. Baltimore Orioles (53-65)
8/4 – @ Phillies – Lost 13-3
8/5 – @ Phillies – Lost 5-0
8/6 – @ Phillies – Won 5-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Athletics – Won 3-2
8/9 – vs. Athletics – Lost 11-3
8/10 – vs. Athletics – Lost 3-2
After it seemed like the Orioles figured things out at the plate last week, this week was the complete opposite after they scored as many runs against the Blue Jays last Tuesday as they did all week this week against the Phillies and A’s. Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman haven’t been nearly as dominant as they were the past two years, pitching has been inconsistent at times, and they’re playing down to less talented teams, and they’ll have their hands full again when they face the Mariners and Astros next.
Up next: vs. Mariners (8/12-14), @ Astros (8/15-17)
24. Arizona Diamondbacks (57-61)
8/4 – vs. Padres – Won 6-2
8/5 – vs. Padres – Lost 10-5 (11)
8/6 – vs. Padres – Lost 3-2
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – vs. Rockies – Won 6-1
8/9 – vs. Rockies – Won 6-5
8/10 – vs. Rockies – Won 13-6
The Diamondbacks stayed competitive this week, falling short of a series win against San Diego but handling the Rockies over the weekend as expected. Encouragingly, several young players have stepped up, providing a needed boost after the team traded Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor to Seattle at the deadline. That progress will be tested with a trip to Arlington to face the Rangers before another matchup with Colorado as they’ll look to keep building momentum in the midst of the playoff push.
Up next: @ Rangers (8/11-13), @ Rockies (8/14-17, 4 Games)
25. Athletics (53-67)
8/4 – OFF
8/5 – @ Nationals – Won 16-7

8/7 – @ Nationals – Won 6-0
8/8 – @ Orioles – Lost 3-2
8/9 – @ Orioles – Won 11-3
8/10 – @ Orioles – Won 3-2
The A’s had an up-and-down week but still earned back-to-back road series wins over the Nationals and Orioles. Their offense remains a strength, with an MLB-high four players already at 20-plus homers and Lawrence Butler just five away from joining them. With the Rays and Angels visiting next, they have a chance to keep trending upward, and while a postseason berth may not come this year, their young core and steady progress suggest it’s only a matter of time as they prepare for their move to Las Vegas in a couple of years.
Up next: vs. Rays (8/11-13), vs. Angels (8/15-17)
26. Atlanta Braves (51-67)
8/4 – vs. Brewers – Lost 3-1
8/5 – vs. Brewers – Lost 7-2
8/6 – vs. Brewers – Lost 5-4
8/7 – vs Marlins – Won 8-6
8/8 – vs Marlins – Lost 5-1
8/9 – vs Marlins – Won 7-1
8/9 – vs Marlins – Won 8-6
8/10 – vs Marlins – Won 7-1
The Braves might’ve ran into a buzzsaw early in the week as the Brewers came into town and walked out with a sweep, but in a rare five-game slate with the Marlins over the weekend, Atlanta took four out of five games against a Miami team that seemed to have more momentum than they’ve had in a while. Although that might be nice for a team that needed that kind of swing badly, they’re now back on the road again this week with the struggling Mets and surging Guardians lying ahead.
Up next: @ Mets (8/12-14), @ Guardians (8/15-17)
27. Pittsburgh Pirates (51-68)
8/4 – vs. Giants – Won 5-4

8/9 – vs. Reds – Lost 2-1
8/10 – vs. Reds – Lost 14-8
Pittsburgh had an up-and-down week, going 3-4 after dropping a home series to the Giants and splitting with the Reds. Paul Skenes continues to dominate, tossing a shutout against Cincinnati on Thursday and further cementing himself as the NL Cy Young favorite. Now, he and the Pirates face one of their toughest stretches of the season with road trips to Milwaukee and Chicago to battle divisional rivals, and how they perform this week could go a long way in showcasing how much potential they have for the future.
Up next: @ Brewers (8/11-13), @ Cubs (8/15-17)
28. Washington Nationals (47-70)

8/9 – @ Giants – Won 4-2
8/10 – @ Giants – Won 8-0
The Nationals showed slight improvement this week, taking one from the A’s at home and two from the Giants in San Francisco, but their bigger issues remain. James Wood finally homered Saturday, his first since July 9, and his recent uptick in hits offers hope for more consistency ahead. Still, the road ahead is rough, and a trip to Kansas City to face the Royals followed by a four-game set against the Phillies will test them heavily and likely make it difficult to build on this week’s modest progress.

8/10 – vs. Guardians – Won 6-4
After showing signs of life last week with series wins over the Phillies and Angels, the White Sox quickly regressed, getting swept in Seattle and nearly swept at home by the Guardians with Sunday’s result being their only win of the week. Next week’s matchups with the Tigers and Royals offer chances for a rebound, but fans are losing patience. These many frequent struggles they’ve had and no clear direction for the future makes it harder for Chicago supporters to see when they’ll have a team worth getting excited about again.
Up next: vs. Tigers (8/11-13), @ Royals (8/15-17)
30. Colorado Rockies (30-87)
8/4 – vs. Blue Jays – Lost 15-1
8/5 – vs. Blue Jays – Lost 10-4
8/6 – vs. Blue Jays – Lost 20-1
8/7 – OFF
8/8 – @ Diamondbacks – Lost 6-1
8/9 – @ Diamondbacks – Lost 6-5
8/10 – @ Diamondbacks – Lost 13-6
Of all the teams that struggled this week, none had it worse than the Rockies, who dropped all six games, including a brutal 45-6, three-game drubbing by the Blue Jays and another rough series in Arizona. With 87 losses already and still weeks left in the season, things have been bad for a while, but after this week’s collapse and with a tough schedule ahead, Colorado could be on pace to approach the historically dreadful season the White Sox endured just a year ago.
Up next: @ Cardinals (8/11-13), vs. Diamondbacks (8/14-17, 4 Games)
